Green Hill Zone is the very first stage in Sonic the hedgehog (1991) and has been recreated numerous times in other games. It features lush, green grass, checkerboard patterns and palm trees.

Sonic the hedgehog (1991)[]

Act 1[]

The stage is pretty much catered to helping the player learn how to control Sonic. There are very few places where he can die, and enemies are not plentiful.

Act 2[]

The obstacles and difficulty level increase slightly as the player gets accustomed to the controls.

This level also contains a glitch where the first rock with a spring, if Sonic pushes on the right side and jumps, he does the walking animation instead of the jumping animation.

Act 3[]

Act 3 starts off much like the other stages, but at the end of the act is the Dr. Robotnik wrecking ball boss. He swings a checkered ball back and forth on a chain, and Sonic must dodge his attacks, get on a platform, and hit him from above. Once defeated, Sonic can release the animals from the capsule.

Sonic Battle[]

Green Hill Zone appears an unlockable content once the game is beat. It features a remix of the iconic music and features a checkerboard theme with palm trees, just like its original counterpart. The stage is fairly large for a roomier brawl.

Sonic Adventure 2[]

Once all of the emblems in the game have been aquired (including emblems for an all 'A' rank), this stage appears on the map as a small island. Whenever Sonic hits a robot, the normal sound is replaced with the sounds from the original game.

Sonic Generations[]

Classic[]

Without any introduction, the player plays as Classic Sonic running through Green Hill Zone. It is very similar to the original counterpart, the main change being enhanced graphics.

Modern[]

After Modern Sonic has been sucked in by the Time Eater, he finds himself in a blank area, but close by is Green Hill Zone. He investigates the stage to find out what has happened. The stage has quite a few new gimmicks, including a giant Chopper and the ability to grind on rails.
